چکیده

We discuss the nature of phase transitions in self-gravitating systems. We show the connexion between the binary star model of Padmanabhan, the thermodynamics of classical point mass stars and the thermodynamics of the self-gravitating Fermi gas at non-zero temperature. We also briefly discuss the influence of rotation on the thermodynamical stability of self-gravitating systems.

The self-gravitating Fermi gas

We discuss the nature of phase transitions in the self-gravitating Fermi gas at non-zero temperature. This study can be relevant for massive neutrinos in Dark Matter models and for collisionless self-gravitating systems experiencing a “violent relaxation”. Below a critical energy (in the microcanonical ensemble) or below a critical temperature (in the canonical ensemble), the system undergoes a...

Self-gravitating fermions and hard spheres models

We discuss the nature of phase transitions in self-gravitating systems both in the microcanonical and in the canonical ensemble. We avoid the divergence of the gravitational potential at short distances by considering the case of self-gravitating fermions and hard spheres models. Three kinds of phase transitions (of zeroth, first and second order) are evidenced. They separate a “gaseous” phase ...

Dynamics and thermodynamics of a simple model similar to self-gravitating systems: the HMF model

We discuss the dynamics and thermodynamics of the Hamiltonian Mean Field model (HMF) which is a prototypical system with long-range interactions. The HMF model can be seen as the one Fourier component of a one-dimensional self-gravitating system. Interestingly, it exhibits many features of real self-gravitating systems (violent relaxation, persistence of metaequilibrium states, slow collisional...

Equilibrium and out of equilibrium phase transitions in systems with long range interactions and in 2D flows

In self-gravitating stars, two dimensional or geophysical flows and in plasmas, long range interactions imply a lack of additivity for the energy; as a consequence, the usual thermodynamic limit is not appropriate. However, by contrast with many claims, the equilibrium statistical mechanics of such systems is a well understood subject. In this proceeding, we explain briefly the classical approa...

Energy landscape and phase transitions in the self-gravitating ring model.

We apply a recently proposed criterion for the existence of phase transitions, which is based on the properties of the saddles of the energy landscape, to a simplified model of a system with gravitational interactions referred to as the self-gravitating ring model. We show analytically that the criterion correctly singles out the phase transition between a homogeneous and a clustered phase and ...
